The UKMTO received a report from the vessel under attack and have received confirmation from a nearby vessel that pirates have been sighted onboard with one skiff reported to be alongside the bulk carrier.

NIGERIA OPS Global Risk Management has received a report that a Panamanian flagged tanker was attacked whilst underway approximately 20nm South of Bonga Field. The attack and attempt to board by the pirates was aborted when a nearby Naval gun boat came to support the tanker. MDAT-GoG have confirmed that the Naval gun boat is escorting the tanker to safety and that the vessel is safe.

Philippines, around 19nm se of Sibago Island It has been reported that a tug boat has been boarded whilst underway 2nm off Sibago Island. The tug boat was towing a cargo vessel when three armed men approached in a green hulled wooden speedboat and managed to board the tug boat. It has been confirmed that the Captain and the Chief Engineer, both of Filipino nationality, have been kidnapped. The speedboat was seen departing the scene and heading towards Candiis, Tuburan or Tongkil Islands. The Naval Forces Western Mindanao are responding to this incident.

Red Sea, Yemen Exact location unknown: The UKMTO has issued an advisory after receiving a telephone call at 2013 UTC, stating that a Yemeni Coast Guard vessel had struck a mine. Investigations are currently being undertaken following numerous reports that the incident took place in Yemeni Territorial Waters in close proximity to the port of Al Mukha. It has been confirmed that two sailors have been killed and that a number of crew members are injured.

Nigeria It has been reported that a Spanish flagged LNG tanker was attacked whilst sailing inbound to Bonny terminal, approximately 10nm Southeast of AKPO Field, Nigeria. One speedboat with seven armed pirates onboard chased the tanker for approximately thirty minutes. The pirates opened fire at the tanker and then attempted to board using a long ladder. A security vessel was dispatched to support the tanker. The speed boat escaped, heading off at high speed on an easterly course at approximately 0725 LT. MDAT-GoG have issued a warning notice confirming the attack. They have confirmed that no injuries have been reported and that the vessel is safe.

Attempts were made by the Master to contact a nearby Naval gun boat but no response was received. The report states that shots were fired by the pirates during their approach. It was later confirmed that the pirates had abandoned their attack and that the NNS Okpabana is in attendance. The crew and vessel are reported as safe

It has been reported that an unknown number of pirates attacked and boarded an offshore supply vessel that was operating approximately 2nm Southeast from Pennington Oil Terminal. The pirates kidnapped the Captain, Chief Engineer, Chief Mate and an Able Seaman before making their escape with stolen items including laptops, mobile phones and food from the ship's stores.

The Swordfish 5 tug boat was reported as hijacked in February 2017 and has been spotted early this morning approximately 35nm West from the attack detailed on 08/03/2017. These reports are unconfirmed by NIMASA and therefore this alert will be classified as a general alert until firm confirmation is received.
