Event: Pirate Attack

Nigeria

It was reported that a passenger boat was hijacked whilst underway in Keme Ebiama creeks, Bayelsa State. The pirates chased and fired at the passenger boat before managing to board. Once onboard the pirates robbed the passengers of their valuables and then hijacked the boat. During this incident three passengers were injured by gunshots and several other passengers suffered machete wounds.

Vessels within a 100 nautical mile radius should increase their anti-piracy deterrents in line with Best Management Practices 4. This should include increased twenty four hour anti-piracy watch keeping and radar monitoring. Vessel hardening should be checked and where appropriate bolstered.
