WAF Security Alert 002 - Suspicious Approach off Bonny

It has been reported that a cargo vessel underway was approached 48NM SSW off Bonny. Duty crew noticed one black speed boat on the starboard side 4.5NM away at a speed of 18Kts. The speed boat then changed course directly towards the vessel and increased the speed to 22Kts, All Anti-Piracy measures were activated, the alarm was raised, lock down procedures in place, ship's horn sounded, fire hoses activated, and the seven-armed guards positioned themselves to provide protection. The speed boat approached to approximately 0.8NM on the starboard quarter, this is when the crew identified a total of seven persons were on board, dressed in black clothing. The vessels armed guards made their weapons visible resulting in the speedboat moving away. No weapons or boarding equipment were sighted during this incident.


Vessels within a 100 nautical mile radius should increase their anti-piracy deterrents in line with Best Management Practices 4. This should include increased twenty four hour anti-piracy watch keeping and radar monitoring. Vessel hardening should be checked and where appropriate bolstered.
