Event: Pirate Attack

South of Bonny, Nigeria

It has been reported that a Panamanian flagged tanker has been attacked 36nm Southwest of the Bonny Fairway buoy. Pirates onboard a speedboat, approached the tanker and opened fire. A security vessel provided protection to the tanker, resulting in the pirates aborting their attack. All crew members have been reported as safe.

Vessels within a 100 nautical mile radius should increase their anti-piracy deterrents in line with Best Management Practices 4. This should include increased twenty four hour anti-piracy watch keeping and radar monitoring. Vessel hardening should be checked and where appropriate bolstered.
