Event: Attempted Hijacking

OPS Global Risk Management has received a report that a vessel was boarded whilst anchored at Cotonou. Eight persons armed with knives and guns, boarded the vessel from a small boat. The assailants demanded that the crew got the vessel underway, however the crew members were unable to start the vessel's main engine. After an hour and a half, the perpetrators made their escape after stealing items of ship's property and the personal belongings of the crew.

Vessels within a 100 nautical mile radius should increase their anti-piracy deterrents in line with Best Management Practices 4. This should include increased twenty four hour anti-piracy watch keeping and radar monitoring. Vessel hardening should be checked and where appropriate bolstered.
